Thomas, Thanks for your very thoughtful comment. I agree that fasting brings us closer to God. For me that means, not so much not eating food, but not taking in and participating in critical, hateful, lustful, etc, thinking. When I guard my thoughts, interestingly enough, sometimes I eat less food. The goal is to draw closer to God and rely less on the five material senses and what the world tries to tell us is important.
